I'm just chalk-talking here about possibilities for capitalizing on the new 110 mph capacity of the Illinois trunk.

I'm wondering about adding a train running St. Louis-Joliet but rather than continuing into Chicago for a connection back along the incredibly slow lakeside tracks, instead turning east and joining either the Michigan services in Michigan City or the Lakeshore Limited route to Cleveland.

Given state support, a new route through 150 miles of Indiana to Ohio is (even more) laughable, so probably only Michigan is conceivable, if there is even a path that could work.

Could you run east on the EJE (and any necessary connecting road) to reach Michigan City, while bypassing much of the lakeshore mess? Or would the EJE still lead you back to a junction somewhere near the IL/IN border, after laboriously crossing many lines, with the Indiana traffic jam still largely in front of you?

Pie in the sky no doubt. But at least it's not one of the same boring old pies in the sky that everyone here is always talking about.
