it seems that there are more trains that are going from Portland and E. Deerfield to Bangor and Waterville than Bangor/Waterville-Portland-East Deerfield. is there a logical explanation for this?

Possibly a matter of the trains' weights. 2 loaded trains with 6 locos (3 ea) may be able to return as 1 train with 4 active and 2 dead-in-tow locos, for example.
