The subject of this post is a condensed version of an announcement on the front page of the NJT website.

How often is this done? Is it really necessary? Will the bags remain until Monday morning? That one elevator won't be able to handle the weekday rush hour traffic, will it?

As an aside, what happens when a great deal of water gets into the PATH system? Since most of it is underground and is flat, is it a major undertaking to get it out?

It depends on what you mean by "a lot". There are air-powered pumps at the low points in each of the tunnels which can remove moderate amounts of water. For larger problems, there's a dedicated pump car. All of this presumes that there is an end to the water - in the case of the 9/11 flooding, water continued to flow in and overwhelmed the capacity of the pumps.
