What's that roaring, whirring loud sound in the subway that eminates from DC cars, especially at speed ?

It sounds like you are referring to their AC Motors...

The Rohrs are the noisest cars in METRO's fleet. They make the whinning noise, but the Bredas, CAFs and Alstroms do not.

The Rohrs also make the same exact noise as our MBTA Red Line's 01800s (#3 RedLine Cars) when both taking off and stopping.

The POS Cafs which derail weekly are by far the noisest.
