I think that if Brazil had been a British colony there would have been a proper system, instead of the very inadquate tracks they have.

The railways were built after Brazil became independent. The main error was to choose several different rail gauges; the second error was to have no plan of a nationwide system connected up. The result was an inadequate network and a lack of connectivity. The result is that the railways have never become an important transport system.
