An English railfan emailed me several months ago asking whether I’d assist him with Railfanning SEPTA, as he had seen my posts concerning SEPTA on a message board, and felt that his time would be better spent with a tour guide.

Tim’s trip to Philly was Friday, May 14. He took NJT train 3817 (Arrows) from New York

to Trenton, and I took PATCO and the second northbound River LINE train from Camden (3501 and 3514), arriving at Trenton on time at 7:43. At Trenton Station I photographed a Clocker that had paused at the end of the platform while an employee examined the last car and an NJT train crept up along the platform behind it.

I hadn’t noticed it, but the Clocker had a Genesis diesel behind the ALP46.

The SEPTA R7 to Philly had AEM7 #2304 pushing Bombardier coaches, some of which were the center door cars from the Metro North add-on order.

We went outside for Tim to photograph 30th Street Station, then caught the R5 to Radnor. We easily made our eleven minute connection with Route 100, with four minutes to spare.

We arrived in Norristown on time, with three minutes to catch the R6 back to Philly. Most of the three minutes was taken by the motorman initiating our Day Passes.

The R6 was Silverliner IV’s.

We took the Market Street Subway to 5th, then walked to 4th & South so Tim could get a Philly cheesesteak at Jim’s Steaks. We walked past Independence Hall, and Tim photographed the “Big Bus” double deckers, telling me the manufacturers names and stating that he had driven one in England for two years.

We walked from Jim’s Steaks to Broad Street, and took a local BSS to Girard, where we transferred to a Ridge Ave express, northbound. We changed direction at Erie and took an express to City Hall, then took the MFSE to 30th Street and a subway surface trolley to 40th Street, and walked a block west to get a better photo angle.

Back at the 40th Street portal, a motorman interrupted his trip for a couple minutes to use the facility.

Yes, these are really trolleys.

We returned to 30th Street, then took the Market Street subway/elevated to 69th Street, entering on track 2. Our train went out headed for Frankford terminal as soon as the passengers got off and a motorperson got into the cab at the other end. The following train entered at the usual passenger discharge platform.

We took a Route 102 (Sharon Hill) trolley to Drexel Hill Junction and photographed several light rail cars there.

We returned to Terminal Square on the same car that we had taken to Drexel Hill Jct, getting off at Fairfield Ave to photograph a SEPTA work car.

We took the El back to 30th Street, where we purchased NJT tickets to Lindenwold. While we waited for train #4615, we went upstairs to get some more photographs.

I still photograph Silverliners II and III whenever I can.

The train to Lindenwold had to wait on the Delair Bridge approach for a bridge opening.

We photographed the NJT train when we got off in Lindenwold,

then took PATCO to 16th & Locust and back to Broadway, where we took the River LINE to Trenton. Tim assured me that he had a marvelous time; I know I did.
