Edison Electric Insitute, Trade Groups Ask Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to Address Rail Coal Shipment Issues

EEI and other major power-oriented trade associations have sent a letter to FERC asking the agency to investigate the problems with rail shipments of coal to power plants, Electricity Daily reported today. EEI asked FERC to sit down with them to discuss the problems and possibly hold a public workshop on the issue.

The letter said, according to the newsletter: "Each of us has received reports from our respective members with coal-fired generation regarding significant, sustained railroad coal delivery problems. Specifically, for some coal-fired generators, rail coal delivery has not been keeping pace with coal use."

Among the other groups expressing concerns were the American Public Power Association, National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, and Electric Power Supply Association. One utility official said the Surface Transportation Board, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, is providing little creative guidance to resolve the rail-shipment problem, stating: "We view the STB as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the railroad industry."
