Grant book is worthwhile. Id say stuff like this should be mandatory reading for most foamers. Some real world history goes a long way to understanding what was involved and what the suits were up against. Politics is what everything was about whether or not what interests you. It does provide a goodly amount of "closure" as a previous poster mentioned. The hardware part of railroading is interesting but it is just a means to an end.

After reading the Grant book, which I highly recommend, I get the impression, as Paul Harvey would say, NOW YOU KNOW THE REST OF THE STORY.

Another good book is Erie Lackawanna East by Karl R. Zimmerman.......

The EL Story, Carelton.. we have that and seems to me it's mostly a B&W equivalent of the "picture books" Morning Sun puts out. Not knocking it any, it does cover steam and diesel both, but I don't remember there being any actual text telling a history like say, the Archer Lehigh Valley book -
