In another message board far, far away, there was a discussion about industrial critters and trackmobiles - no consensus (some felt that critters were being revived for in-plant industry use, others felt trackmobiles have conquered that role), but got me to wondering - about how many track-mobiles are in active use across North America (well, the US and Canada at least). (By trackmobile, I mean any sort of purpose-built road/rail capable rail-car mover from any legit manufacturer, as opposed to some guy kludging a coupler to his farm's John Deere).
BTW, yes, I did read the Trackmobile site, and did see this "Since that day, more than 10,000 Trackmobile units have been put into service in 54 countries." However, I am wondering about all Active rail-car movers, not just Trackmobile, and in just US & Canada.
