The 06/07 TRAINS Magazine had an article that spanned pages 26-7 about the used locomotive market, but the whole article seemed elementary and not geared toward those really looking for a locomotive.
What do you think?

Trains magazine is railfan magazine why would they be having a sales pitch for actual selling?? or listing actual sales ???

I agree that "Trains" was always intended as a "railfan magazine" but lets
look at the June, 2007 issue. I find ads for derails, testing laboratories,
basic spur track safety, TTX the rail car pooling experts and among other
things a full page ad on the back cover for diesel locomotives. Kind of
makes me wonder just where this magazine goes after printing.

I'm gonna go out on a limb, here, and say that IF someone was really in the market for a locomotive, Trains would probably be the LAST place they would look. But, you already knew that, didn't you Terry?

Terry, why the new screen name? No hyphen this time? Isn't it against the site policy to have more than one username?

The magazine is about railroading. I sure there is many a RR manager
that gets a monthly copy of Trains along with Railway Age as required
reading. Trains does not just publish articles about trainwatching or some
obscure locomotive in a museum or shortline but rather there
are many articles about the contemporary business side of of railroading.

So having ads for equipment sales or services is targeting a segement
of Trains readers. It also helps pay the bills as well.

That Trains article was not intended to list locomotives for sale. Instead it was more of a "here are a few of the things to keep in mind if one decides to pursue this sort of thing." It's not the end all, be all guide to buying used locomotives. There is no sense in claiming that the article is not something is does not say it is.
