E's are no longer in Apulia, NY. I don't know where they are. Jamesville? Syracuse? ????

I saw them today while ridin Thomas the Tank Engine. There both behind
the loco shop in Utica. Maybe dead lined I'm not sure. They don't
look that great back there, I hope their fate is not at the end of a torch.

what kind of air breaks and do they have cabsignal?

  by Otto Vondrak

I can't speak to the air brakes... but I can guess that the units are NOT equipped with cab signal capability... aren't they originally E9's from the Metra commuter operation in Chicago (and before that, BN and CB&Q)?

How is the access to these units in Utica? Can they be photographed? If so anyone have decent directions?

Thanks,

ns59; access is easy. Get off the thru-way(I-90) and proceed south on
Genesee St. over the canal and Mohawk river. Past Mickey D's
and the other eatery's to the traffic light. Get in the far right lane
and take a quick right turn onto Lee St. BEFORE going over the
rr overpass on Genesee. Just follow Lee St. down and around
(take it easy thru the construction zone) and the road will put
you along side the CSX main across from the NYS&W shop complex.
The E's are held captive behind the fence looking very forlorn.
Don't forget to also check out "my" loco (6721) when your in the
area. Follow Lee St. back around now crossing the overpass to get
to the station area. Maybe enjoy a Saranac at the pub in the station.

E9's have PS-68, a non self lapping brake schedule in them, and they DO have cab signals. In fact I have operated both units at different times on NJT's Raritan Valley Line in NJ in conjunction with the 142 and they do have working and compatable cab signals, at least in that particular instance. PS-68 is similar to 24-RL. The engineer has to watch the guages and manually stop the brake pipe reduction(Application) by placing the handle into "LAP" position to hold the brake application at the level he determines to be appropriate. With more modern 26/30 systems, they are self lapping, and thus the brake pipe reduction will stop on its own and maintian the application in conjunction with the handle's position in the "service" area of the handle. Why the E-9's were never upgraded to a more modern 26L system escapes me, as there are some who do not know whow to handle anything BUT 26/30 braking systems.

Not to many roads were Cab signal is any good anyway.
you need Cab Signal /ATC or Acess or the engine becomes a hangar queen.
