In the late evening (20.00 hour local time) of October 17th a blaze destroyed the Nürnberg W roundhouse, 25 historic railway vehicles are concidered to be a total loss. Thes vehicles are part of the collection of the Nürnberg railway museum.

See the links below although in German the pictures are quite self explainatory I think so:

I speak no German whatsoever, but I believe the appropriate phrase is...

Das ist nicht goot, nein. ("This is not good, no.") (Fluent speakers of German can correct me on this.)

The images from that second to last link were kind of erie, seeing those steam locomotives sitting among the flames. It saddens me to think that the historically significant parts of that collection may now forever be lost to the ages. :( (I happen to hold a BA (Bachelor of Arts degree) in History, so I like seeing things preserved to show our decendants what our lives were like at a given point in time.)

Hopefully there are some salvagable items among the ruins. Keep us up to date as the investigations and reports are released.

I found some more photo's on the site of the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Nürnberg (Voluntary Fire Brigade of Nürnberg). Again in German only.

http://www.ffgartenstadt.de/index.php?kat=4&page=18

Besides 80 men of the profesional fire brigade 120 men of the voluntary fire brigade were summoned to the scene. Looking at the pictures I think there is little hope any usable or restorable can be retreived from the ruins.

George,

"Eine schreckliche katastrophe.(= a horribe catastrophe)"

Just the words I was looking for. Danke schoen. (Or as my Norwegian ancestors would say, "Tusen Tak" ("A thousand thanks").)

Any updates as to what caused the fire and what's salvageable?

By the way, Thomas, thanks for that list of damaged equipment that was in the roundhouse, much appreciated.

It seems that a few of the steam-locos will be repaird.

But the diesels are gone....
