The MBTA's slow rehab programs https://railroad.net/post1603411.html#p1603411 and gp40-mc-overhaul-t169400.html. Since the MBTA has not ordered any new locomotives while building a new line and piloting new services, once they return to a pre-pandemic schedule there will be another crisis.

Rehabbed CTRail P40DC heading east on Amtrak 48 as seen at Elkhart at 0023 Tuesday 2/7/23.

I understand the unit was 6706 (former Amtrak 842). Is this the third or fourth P40 to have been overhauled for CDOT?

Thanks for the engine #, this would be #7 (6701,6705, 6706, 6708, 6709, 6710,6711)

Does anyone know the number of the rebuilt CDOT P40 that was on 48/448 last week?
Thanks

I see the original contract award was $39 million. Anyone know if the price escalated thru unforeseen modifications or for other reasons.

So, $ 39M for rebuilding 10. Now why in the world hasn't Amtrak rebuilt some P-42s for $3.9M per unit?

I would think the price would be lower now as a result of delivery being several years late.

CtDOT got a good deal in rebuilding the P-40s. Look at the per-unit price of Amtrak's new diesels versus the like-new rebuilt P-40s.

6704 was spotted in a cut from Beech Grove that CARDINAL 51 picked up on 9-11 and took to Chicago.
I presume it is one of the freshly overhauled units.

Not remotely the same thing. The rebuilt P40s are still Tier 0 vs. Tier 4 and will still be loud and slow as hell.

Loud, i agree. But slow?
4200 HP(3200 with max HEP load)with only two or three cars is still overkill....

The slowness refers to computer restricted loading pattern of the diesel at no/slow speeds to achieve the emissions standards.
