Alright, I had a far fetched idea… bear with me as I try to explain this. So the back Bay train collision happened in the early 1990s destroying F40 1073. Since Amtrak was at fault they had to give MBTA compensation for the locomotive that was wrecked; so Amtrak paid for an extra F40 in the 1990s Morrison Knudsen F40PHM-2C order from MBTA. That extra engine that Amtrak paid for was 1036. So 1036 technically took 1073 spot on the F40 roster.
The idea was when 1036 gets rebuilt in Erie Pa, it could be renumbered to 1073 and be in the original F40 paint (I think it’s called single stripe) and have a plaque on the side (like 1000 or 1052) remembering the crash. I got the idea since, as I said 1036 is 1073 for replacement… 1073 was in the single stripe paint when it got wrecked. I feel like it would be a good tribute or memorial to those affected by the crash if 1036 was the number to 1073 and given that single straight paint with a plaque on the side.
Lastly, that would simply help organize the fleet a little bit by filling in the gap for the missing 1073 number by moving that extra “11th” engine from MK order into the 1073 slot.
I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this idea. Thanks
