Are any M3's still operable? I still wish they'd been rebuilt and modernized.

Some have been PTC modified.[/quote]

They're not going anywhere on Metro North for a bit the M3a's.

Any pictures of the M3 cars being broken up?

These may have been mentioned before: two with blue "faces" and a yellow stripe around the carbody. Noticed two of them outside the Hillside facility, on the westside of the building, this morning.

Thank you.

The two M3 sets in Long Beach took a trip somewhere earlier this week. I'm guessing to Hillside for an inspection? Are there any other M3s on the railroad in standby mode?

Everything was temporarily moved out of Long Beach and Far Rockaway yards for Tropical Storm Herni.

Lots of M3s standing by, some waiting for a return to service, others standing by for their trip to final Maspeth on their own wheels.
9929-30 is ready to go
9787-8, 9833-4 is waiting in the wings.

I doubt that the LIRR M3’s will ever run on revenue trains anymore.

And that is bad news for us die-hard front window rail fans. I'm wondering how I will ever get to appreciate the new three-track railroad, new stations and new signals on the main-line as I won't even be able to see any of it except from station platforms. :(

Curious to know if they've sent any more M3s out for scrapping lately?

Dog (and Everyone): Heard mention at the December 2021 LIST meeting that the 80 M3 cars with PTC installed
are being stored with a return-to-service planned for the opening of ESA and completing the Main Line Third
Track Project one year from now with an anticipated ridership increase in 2023 depending on how the recovery
from the C-19 problem evolves over the course of 2022 affecting the percentage of riders returning to the LIRR.

9893-9894 which were sent out during 2021 had experimental interior changes - blue and orange seating along
with walls similar in type to the M7 cars. I only rode in these cars once after the modifications were made and
did not get another chance to take a good look at them again before they were retired...MACTRAXX
