Steve: This DD1 picture is of an arriving westbound train to Long Island City.
This photo is facing due east.

The viaduct above is for the Horace Harding Expressway (LIE) going over the
Dutch Kills which is a branch waterway off of the Newtown Creek.

The east entrance and toll plaza of the Queens-Midtown Tunnel
is adjacent to the photo location behind the photographer...MACTRAXX

Attempt at getting close on Google maps: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Long+ ... 73.9485424

For those that don't know, if you hold down both the alt and cntrl keys while moving your mouse, you can pan around that map.

Great pic, thanks for posting!

Main Line at Hillside Avenue facing west with signal bridge, Kew Gardens apartments and overpass in distance.

Westbridge Station, to be exact.

Technically the Queens Midtown Expressway.

So here's a question... Why the DD-1 on a Long Island City arrival?

Yes. DD1s pulled passenger trains to LI City. When they were taken out of service, third rail was removed from the Montauk branch (around 1953 . . .Look at Emery maps for removal dates.)

As DD1s also pulled and switched freight sidings, third rail on those sidings was also removed at the same time and the remaining H10s locomotives still in service took over the switching along with the recently-arrived diesels.
