What's left of the WHOLE Ocean City Branch.....

Album begins in Palermo where the line split off to Beesley's Point, and ends at the station on 10th St:

Thanks Ben. It is always bittersweet looking at those shots. I could almost feel the mosquitoes and green heads biting in those marsh shots.

Back in January or February we walked the ROW from Route 9 to the waterway right before the Crook Horn Creek bridge. It looks pretty much the same as the 2013 photos, but with newer graffiti under the Parkway bridge. The road underneath has vegetation cut back to just about that bridge (I'm assuming for inspection purposes). We were surprised at just how well preserved the ROW was- it would be risky with ticks during the warmer months but we had virtually no problem walking the whole thing to just outside OC.

If I'm not mistaken, NJTransit still owns the trackage from Palermo Junction out to the Ocean City municipal boundary (including to Beesley's Point). Ocean City owns the trackage throughout the City itself, and there was a deed provision that the ROW be used for public purposes lest the property revert to NJT ownership. There was a proposal years ago make the right-of-way a bike path connecting Palermo to OC, but the NIMBYs killed it. More recently I've heard that the ROW in OC was being considered for some kind of flood mitigation work.

Is there anything worth recording today beyond 10th St. towards 4th St. and the Gardens? The grade crossing near the tail of the 4th St. wye lasted some time after 1958.

Jim,
Other than the actual station at 10th St, there's barely anything in THAT vicinity worth recording. Maybe a gradual rise where the RoW once existed (which is now a rail to trail/bike path), but everything is gone. You wouldn't even know a RR once ran through town once you're past 10th St.

Mr Reynolds,
Thank you for the kind words!

The ROW is still basically intact from 35th Street to Crook Horn with rails still in place from 40th to 45th and 46th to 50th. A few years ago, the remains of the passing siding at 51st Street were still poking through the pavement. There is also an original cast iron crossbuck standing ( relocated ) along Haven Avenue in front of the Crossings condos between 34th and 35th.
