SOrry to disappoint you.. if you flip the view around.. you can see other end of this hopper car. its not solid sheet metal. It have opening through between 2 sheets of metal which appears to be ramp.

The low end of the hopper gets pushed against a ramp (usually earthen). Then a backhoe can be driven up the ramp and then along hoppers strung together. I saw one in an old video once. The backhoe had arms on it that road along the top of the car.

Not disappointed at all, just my best guess from a quarter mile away. That's why I added the "I think" qualifier. :-)
