I'll be doing a railfan trip on the Metro later this month. Are there any lines that I should avoid for safety.

None are going to outright kill you, as far as we know. The Red Line operates with automatic train control on 8-car trains so you could give that a whirl if you wanted. Due to the operational changes while a power substation is rebuilt, I'd avoid the Orange/Silver/Blue lines unless you like waiting.

No, nothing like that. I mean, maybe at 2 AM on a summer evening I would avoid segments of the Yellow/Green line through Chinatown or Anacostia eastward, but no, during general operating hours the entire system is safe.
