Windham, Conn. —
Train enthusiasts will have the chance to experience a rare excursion this fall.
The Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts are sponsoring a passenger excursion from Worcester to Willimantic Oct. 14, a trip one of the organizers believes may not have occurred since the 1960s.
“It’s been so long since there’s been a trip that’s been available to the public like this,” said William Crawford, the secretary of the Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts organization. “This is rare mileage for almost everybody in the hobby.”
The excursion will leave Worcester and travel south through Putnam and Plainfield. The rare section occurs as the train will turn west and journey toward Willimantic where it will stop at the Eastern Connecticut Railroad Museum.
Providence and Worcester Railroad has upgraded its tracks there in the last year, and that, Crawford said, is what has made the trip not only possible, but enticing.
