Looking at my LIRR passenger car roster, there is a question about P54 coaches, numbered 139-178 built by ACF 1911-13. My question is, were they built new for the LIRR or are they ex-PRR and if so, what were their numbers.

Thanks.

Hi Bob:

Here's what you seek;

First, the builder of those cars is not known. It has not been confirmed that they were actually AC&F or even PRR built.

Second, they were built between 1911 and 1914.

Third, they were former PRR cars #21, 29, 34, 38, 49, 51, 53, 58, 64, 70, 74, 76-78, 80, 86, 87, 92, 97, 98, 632, 635, 125, 701, 127, 130, 170, 153, 156, 171, 315, 333, 351, 703, 709, 711, 718, 719, 713, 739 in corresponding order to their LIRR numbering.

Fourth, they were acquired bewteen April and June, 1930 to replace cars #51-90 converted to MU service.

Car #161 was wrecked at milepost 114, Montauk on 10/25/32 when G5s #50 rolled over onto its side, sliding down the embankment and killing both enginemen. The car was scrapped afterwards.

Car #153 was used as an instruction car at Morris Park between 1959 and 1960 and was scrapped in March, 1961.

Cars 139-152, 154-160, 162-178 were scrapped between 1955 and 1956.
