Is there anyplace on the web that someone knows of that displays historical Amtrak timetables? I'm trying to explain something to a friend who insists that Metroliner service was running straight through from Washington to Boston prior to Acela. I know this is obviously untrue, but showing him some timetables would settle the matter without any further discussion.

Well, at one time, there was one Metroliner a week through from Washington to Boston.

I believe it was around 1991-1995 or so, but in addition to the New York NY to Washington DC Metroliners, there was one round trip each weekday from New Haven CT to Washington DC. It operated southbound in the morning, and northbound in the evening. On Friday evenings only, the northbound ran through to Boston.

To add some more trivia, Metroliner 201 use to start out of Downingtown PA and travel to Washington DC. It would deadhead in the wee hours of the morning from Philadelphia to Thorn Interlocking, change ends, and operate revenue from Downingtown to Washington via Philadelphia. This was before my time, but I heard stories about it from fellow Harrisburg Line Block Operators. I would think it was when the Metroliners were MU equipment since there is no where in the Downingtown / Thorndale are to “loop” or “wye” a train. I do not know if there was an evening return trip or not.

There were Boston-NYP New England Metroliners about 1989 or so. Two round-trips in about 3'55". The New England Metroliners became the New England Express. I also think there was LA-San Diego Metroliner service for a time.

The NE Metroliner was also there in 91. I used it during the holidays as a reserved train for $5 more than th over-packed cattle cars.

Diesel Metroliner? Sort of diluting the brand equity, don't you think?

3:55 is fast, but makes you wonder what the need for Acela was if they could already make times like that.

Really? I never heard of the Metroliner brand name being used for that service, although certainly the "San Diegans" used Amfleet coaches (and ex-Metroliner cab control cars) in pre-Surfliner days.
