who knows what is that equipment on the circle on the picture of Newcastle station:

i would have said trap points too . but they are way to close to the main line , anything derailed would end up on the mainline .
i would guess , and its only a guess , they are remmants of track remodelling .

Note that that track layout has been drastically modernised and altered since the days of Steam.
