On Canadian Model Trains' Web Site (www.modeltrains.com, what's new section) they announced on April 1, 2005 HO Proto 2000 GP38-2's and USRA 0-8-0's in LIRR livery. On the GP38-2 they listed two road numbers (257 and 271) both with 88" short hoods. No photos were posted and Life Like's web site was not updated. This looks to be a legitimate announcement. Has anyone else heard about this ? The announcement date is ominous of course, and I was not sure if the LIRR ever had USRA 0-8-0's (they probably did). Very curious about the GP38-2's......

Painting a GP38-2 in LIRR does not make it a LIRR Gp38-2.
The cab and airfilter arrangement on LIRR units is different from standard GP38-2's

Was the C-51 a USRA design?

see, a company like P2K will make the "in general" modeal and then supply the extra parts for the detailing of a specific road.

as i mentioned in my MSTS thred, if you dont like it then the heck with you, dont buy it.

most of us just want it so we can see a model of a LIRR train. then whom ever wants to SUPER DETAIL the stock model IE. customising it to the spiciffic road in this case LIRR, can then procede off the base model.

no need to be nitpicky children, ahhhh... maby thats onw reason why few companys make LIRR because of the nitpicky ness thats shown.

The cab on the GP-38-2's are standard EMD cabs, nothing special about them. The 88 inch short hood would be wrong for those road numbers (but correct for 272-277). Units 250 to 271 should have 81 inch noses. The air filter box is angled on the LIRR units (this was done after deleivery so they would fit into Jamaica station), and was adopted by EMD for all other GP-38-2 production. The air filters are also "standard" chicken wire style on units 250 to 271 and corregated on 272-277. These were also EMD options according to the "phase" or year of production of the unit. The only major visual differences in LIRR GP-38-2's compared to other roads are the marker lights (which was an EMD option), steps on units 250 to 271 only (never seen the same style of steps on any other EMD loco except for some D&H GP-39-2's), low profile cooling fans and low profile exaust stacks (again, to solve the clearance issue in Jamaica station).
Seems as if P2K would just change the road numbers to 272 to 277 they would have a decent model on the market.

Acrding to P2K packaging, they clame to produce a model to the specifications of the proto-type and the spcifactions of the proto-type roads tha had them

so with that said, there models should be 95-100% accurate. i wouldent put it past them, tho LIRR units were "unique" comparded to others reguraidng the options low profile stuff and so on.

No it wasn't. The biggest difference was with the firebox. The C-51 had a wider firebox than the USRA design.
