Two trains met head on at Sloterdijk on the line that connects Amsterdam with Schiphol airport. That line crosses over another main line.

It's not yet clear how it happened. A number of people were injured and one person has died. The Netherlands has a good record of having few accidents.

it was not a head on, but a rear ender, both trains were heading for Amsterdam Central Station.
The IRM is a constructive total loss all cars buckled at crush zones.
sadly one passenger died and 17 still in hospital.
If you look at picture you can see the reason for our FRA crush strenght ;-)

Is there any other country that uses the American regulations? If not, do you ever wonder why?

About 20 years ago Sloterdijk was an interesting new station and I went to see it. The line to Schiphol goes off at 90 degrees and passes on an upper station at right angles to the original line. I can't think of any reason why trains should go head to head. I assume there will have been a signalling problem.

the sprinter left Centraal station towards Harlem and ran a signal, heading right into path of train from Alkmaar to Amsterdam Centraal.

Investigation

That the driver missed the signal has now been confirmed by an investigation carried out by track operator ProRail. The report was presented to parliament in a briefing on Monday evening by Melanie Schultz van Haegen, caretaker transport minister since the fall of the cabinet on Saturday.

According to the report, if the signal had been fitted with the latest safety system, the train would have been brought to a halt and the crash could have been avoided, the NRC reports.

According to a member of another forum I frequent who is from the Netherlands, this section of track is controlled by a signal system that is 60 years old.
