To clarify two questions from above:
The box on the front of the pilot is the ASC relay box, as mentioned above. Some engines also had this relay box mounted on the engineer's side running board.
The air reservoir tank was relocated on later models underneath the boiler in front of the driving wheels. This is where 39's was. If you see the engine today in Riverhead, the brackets for the reservoir are still there.
