I caught train #8054 from Jamaica to Farmingdale yesterday and the last 2 M-1 cars in the consist were 9047 and 9360. This is my first time seeing a mismatched pair. Are there any other M-1 or M-3 married pairs that are mismatched? If so, which ones?

Joe,

There are quite a few mismatched M-1s.

9047/360
9187/502 (overhauled cars)
9299/400 (overhauled cars)
9619/312
9323/102
9125/606
9271/482
9415/430
9613/442
9725/718

I do not know what happened to most of the mate cars. 9300 was in a derailment at Jamaica a year or so ago. They took the overhaul equipment off it, and retrofitted 9400 with the equipment. 9300 was scrapped.

There are no mismatched M-3s. 9891/9892 were renumbered to 9945/9946 as a result of Colin Ferguson incident.

While on the subject of mismatches:

9625 was totalled at Babylon in 1984. Interlocking feature was overridden, and the tower threw the switch underneath the train. Luckily, only a few minor injuries on a sparsely populated mid-afternoon train. Car was cut into 3 pieces and taken away on flatbed trailers.

Since then, another car has since been renumbered to 9625. Today, 9625/626 are overhauled cars. They should be around for awhile.

were those chunks of wreck from babylon stored in 'corona yard' (near shea stadium) for awhile after the incident? I vaguely recall as a kid around that time seeing large chunks of an M series car or cars down there.

Tom,

Thanks for the info! I didn't know there were that many mismatched pairs. I always keep an eye out for the consecutive numbering on the cars, but I've only caught that one from yesterday.

DogBert,

The pix I took of it being flatbedded away were the last I saw of 9625. If you saw 3 chunks of a mangled car around August of 1984, it is a safe bet that it was 9625.

What about the slime/gel cars? I beleive one of the units is the former 9401?

Probably so.
My listing is of cars still in revenue service, as per LIRR RSMS (Rolling Stock Maintenance System).
Most of these mismatches will go to the scrapper as M-7s replace the M-1 fleet. (Notice there are only 4 overhaul cars amongst the mismatches.)

I saw 9323/102 last night along with 9001/9002 on the train before it. The 9001 was lead car.

Joe,

I periodically check to make sure 9001 and 9002 are still in service.
They would be kind of a de facto "Flagship" pair of the M series cars.
Unfortunately, they are not amongst the overhauled cars. Hence, their days are numbered. :(

I see 9001 almost weekly now. Saw it last week in a middle of a consist.

I happened to see the 9125/606 tonight as well as the 9001 again!

On another note, I was at Bethpage station tonight with a buddy at the crossing east of Stewart Ave. The horn of a westbound electric that was passing through didn't sound as loud as it should have been. I realized after the first car had passed the crossing that the horn was not working on the head car and the conductor was in the second car blowing the horn! I've never seen that happen before. The conductor had his hand on the horn and he was looking down the aisle of the second and first cars.

I've been on trains where the lead car wouldn't operate properly so the engineer was operating the train from the third car and the conductor was in the lead car calling out the signals.
