The 7k cars braking system is compatible with the rest of the fleet at a rudimentary level and the coupler strength is sufficient for events just like this. A train of the older cars can rescue a dead train of 7k cars just like a train of 7k cars can rescue a dead train of older cars.
Situations like these are considered in the design of the cars. Though not routine, having to tow a dead train is not that far from a standard incident response. You would be shooting yourself in the foot if you had only a small number of vehicles capable of rescuing/towing trains or you had to risk damaging equipment to do so.
It gets really fun when your pushing the train, because then you'd have the person actually moving the 14-car consist sitting 600' behind the front of the train, taking orders from the guy in front via radio.
