Find some technical stats about what the SEPTA Silverliner V singlets draw vs. the SLV married pairs. Then apply that ratio to what the M8 pairs draw and you've got a ballpark estimate on power draw for hypothetical powered M8 singlet that doesn't currently exist. Although because of the extra electrical guts needed by the DC 3rd rail capability, you may need the full undercarriage space of a married pair to fit all those guts. So the analogy with the Silverliners and NJT Arrow pairs/singlets is rough at best for a vehicle that has to operate on both AC and DC.

There will never ever be a need for singlet powered EMU's on Metro North or significant number of trains with odd-numbered consists. These trains are so stuffed they need octuplets most of the time on the New Haven. The only reason these 25 unpowered units were provisioned as an option in the first place is because they thought they were going to be buying replacement bar cars. And still want to cover their butts in case some politicians make bringing back bar cars enough of a cause to force the issue. So these are little more than 25 'fungible bodies' they can run in regular seating configuration then waste a bunch of money converting a few later if someone puts a gun to their head. As opposed to 12 more married pairs that would...you know...actually increase service levels by adding trains.

How much would it have cost to add cabs to the cars? Then they could be put on the front of a train and more easily removed for inspection. Would it have been cheaper to order triplets to solve the inspection problem?

Pretty sure after the 4's and 6's they didn't want to bother with triplets again, but someone who actually has experience with that can correct me.

If it had cabs, it also would need control equipment air reservoirs, Cab signal/ACSES, bigger batteries due to headlights and controls even recorder etc etc, .

and again the S cars do not form triplets, they will run between two or more pairs, like M-8 pair - M-8 single - M-8 pair

They should have red ends and the color of the red stripe change to black near the end. Just to make them not look weird in a consist.

They get buried in the consist between pairs. Yes, it'll look stupid, but so would a solid red end. Nobody but railfans are going to notice that sort of thing anyway, and if you notice, the black stripes are under cabs on the pairs, so there might be logic as to why the stripe is just red.

I am surprised to hear that the singles are also having their prototypes made in Japan. You would think the Lincoln plant has enough experience by now to make these cars even if they are somewhat different. Also does anyone know how many are being made in Japan?

Only that one. But 2 from Lincoln already made it to New Haven a couple weeks ago, the one from Japan is still in Selkirk (CSX :-D )
