Levis Station and Ferry to Quebec City

As a follow-on to my post here on the Ocean to Sainte-Foy.....

Until 1998...Levis was the stop on the south shore of the St. Lawrence for the Halifax-Montreal trains and the short ferry ride was shown in CN Timetables as the connection over to Quebec City.



Today the old right-of-way along the river is a walking/biking trail and the trains now run through Joffre Yard several miles south then over to Sainte-Foy. (Between 1998 and 2012.....Charny was the stop for the Halifax-Montreal trains....not Sainte-Foy)

Here's the westbound Scotian from Halifax back in the '70s...and that same view today from the ferry. The old station building and canopy have been restored.

And the view from the ferry of the Fortification of the Walled City and the iconic Canadian Pacific Railway's Chateau Frontenac Hotel......now a Fairmont (and not it's usual photogenic self with the scaffolding covering the face during a major renovation)





The Scotian is being fuelled at Levis after a particularly nasty run up the St. Lawrence Valley from Riviere-du-Loup through a snow storm. (ferry dock in the background)

You could do a great little railfan excursion in Quebec City back in the ‘80s on VIA’s St. Laurent to Mont Joli.

The St. Laurent departed from Gare du Palais in downtown Quebec City and made a wide loop around the city. Stopped at Ste-Foy.....crossed the St Lawrence to Charny then continued onto Levis. Here you could get off, look across the river and almost see Gare du Palais where you had departed from an hour and twenty minutes earlier....25 track miles away but only about a mile “as the crow flies” over the river........then just hop back across on the ferry.
