We are approaching the 47th anniversary of the Knox Mining disaster which took place on Jan 22, 1959. This disaster occured in the River slope mine in Port Griffith (near Ptttston); the miners were working too close to the surface due to the mining company moving the "safe lines" (red lines) on the maps, and actually punched through the bottom of the Susquehanna river. The flood ended most of the underground Anthacite mining in the north field. Twelve miners lost their lives. Inquiries found a trail of greed and indifference on the part of the mining companies.

I read in the paper today that there are plans for a mining heritage center and park near the site of the disaster. I have visited the site many times and I think this is a great idea. There are memorials near the site at a church.

Please take a minute and remember the 12........

Work safe
