OK, David. The ICE trains of the time, had composite wheels, which flexed slightly. The flexing caused the tread to brake as the train was running at 125mph. It caught a guard rail, causing the pile-up.

not composition wheels, but wheels with tires (steel) like steam engines but the joint between tire and wheel was a flexible compound.
