I'll be in the Holmdel, NJ area for a good portion of July for work, and was wondering if there were any railfanning places nearby - say within a 10-20 minute drive of Holmdel? Any info would be great!

Thanks!

Browns Yard is the closest freight yard in the Holmdel area. Depending on what days you will be in the area, you may be able to see Browns Yard local SA31 heading down to Red Bank for the Southern Secondary. Typically, the SA31 runs on Tuesdays & Sundays. There have been times where they have run on a Thursday or a Friday. They usually get down to Red Bank between 1:30 to 2:30 in the afternoon. You can check the "CR on Southern Secondary" thread on this forum.

Other than the SA31, there is just the NJT activity. I am sure you are aware about NJT's photo policy when on their property.

If you are interested, the closest main line to Holmdel would be the Shared Assets Lehigh Line which runs through towns such as Bound Brook, South Plainfield and Clark. The first two spots can be reached from Route 287 via the Parkway and Clark is off the Parkway. However, a Saturday morning trip, when rail activity is pretty good, can have you sitting in lots of Parkway traffic attempting to return to the Holmdel area.

There isn't too much action in Holmdel, except the Coast Line. The Coast line has dozens and dozens of NJT trains, and an occasional work train or track car movement (usually late morning, early afternoon) and the occasional freight train heading down to Red Bank and the Southern Secondary, very couple of days.

A good location in Holmdel is at the Centerville Road xing. There is a superelevated curve (trains lean into the curve) right before the crossing adn there aren't too many trees right there at the Xing, allowing a good line of site...there is an EMS building right at the Xing and curve, and on the other side of the tracks, there is a big park. High speeds right there, 70 mph through the curve, with trains accelorating comeing out of it back up to 80.
