Once the operators had slowed the train down and inserted "slumber stops" from about midnight into the schedules the ride was OK although there was still the occasional "bang and jolt" that could spill drings. I put this down to slack in the drawgear.

On Christmas Day '99 we travelled from Sydney to Melbourne, leaving mid-afternoon and travelling via the Blue Mountains. The overnight ride along the cross-country Parkes-Cootamundra line was the worst I have experienced. Fortunately we had been upgraded from a Pullman Compartment, which has upper and lower berths, to a State Compartment which has two lower berths otherwise I would have had real worries about being thrown out of the upper.
