In addition to a new coat of paint and a new set of horns, GP40 #337 has new reporting marks: MEC. Previously this unit was lettered for BM.

Saw it today in Portland:

Nice catch,
any idea why the switch from B&M to MEC?

There's always the slight chance it was a mistake that wasn't caught by the paint shop. So many of the repaints have been for MEC units that soemone might have forgtten to apply the B&M marks.

Good Point,
it would be nothing that hasn't happened before. Seems it was just a few months ago that 605 got released without FRA required reflective tape. And they have been busy up there lately...

I thought about that possibility as well. You never know; people are human and mistakes happen. Maybe one of our resident railroaders can try to take a peek at the blue card.

Transferring locomotive ownership from one subsidiary to another is not unprecedented, though. They've done it a number of times in the past.

337 was on NMSE in Lowell today, the MEC reporting marks have been removed and hastily re-stenciled BM.

Well, the rate of repaints out of Waterville in any one given month this year would out do the total for 2006-2008. At this rate, and the fact that the majority of the roster is Maine Central, and certainly the majority of repaints have been Maine Central, this mistake should have happened long ago.

Waterville tries their best, but mistakes they do happen.

At any rate, the fact that it has been re-BM'd would seem to answer the "why?" question that we've all been wondering about. Thanks Mr. Hutchinson for the update!
