Lumber Heritage Grant Received

The Clinton County Historical Society is proud to announce that it is the recipient of a matching grant of $24,900 from the Lumber Heritage Region towards a multi-year half-million dollar restoration project of the Castanea Railroad Station. CCHS plans to restore this station to its former glory. This multi-phase five year project, when complete will house a travel complex museum as well as serve as a welcome center and trail-head destination for the planned rails-to-trails Pine Creek connector from Jersey Shore. Maps, local business and tourist information will be available. This project creates a link to the rest of the community, encouraging tourists to use our local services.

The Lumber Heritage grant is earmarked for Phase I of the construction of a replica water tank kiosk in front of the station. The tank, built from original 1930s railroad blueprints will serve as an interpretive center open to the public, free of charge, 24 hours a day. Plans also call for a new roof for the station in 2008.

In addition to the Lumber Heritage grant which requires CCHS to match it through other funding means, CCHS has received grants from the Degenstein Foundation, Jersey Shore State Bank and the Clinton County Foundation. CCHS has launched a "Dollar-A-Citizen" campaign and has placed money jars throughout the County. More donations are critical. Naming opportunities will become available, and major donors ill have a brass plaque installed Tax-deductible checks made out to "Castanea Railroad Station Restoration Fund" may be mailed to the Heisey Museum, 362 East Water Street, Lock Haven, PA 17745 or directly to Jersey Shore State Bank, 4 W. Main Street, Lock Haven, PA 17745.

Representatives from Clinton County, Jersey Shore State Bank, CCHS and the Clinton County Model Railroad Club were on hand to receive the check from Mike Wennin of the Lumber Heritage Region.
