Trying to straighten out some details in my research, any detail appreciated.

Metro-North had some streamlined coaches in the 100-series that were stainless steel smooth-side cars, I think ex-PRR. I believe these 12 cars were picked up from the defunct SEMTA Detroit commuter service that had been discontinued in 1983. When were these cars retired?

Metro-North also had 10 coaches in the 4800-series, and these cars got painted gray with a blue stripe, similar to the ACMU's. If I recall, they ran as a solid set on a Danbury Branch train. Where did these cars come from, and when were they retired? I seem to remember them lasting into the 1990s.

NYSDOT paid to have Delaware & Hudson equipment refurbished for used on Amtrak's Adirondack in the 1970s. When the Turboliners arrived, the D&H cars were bumped and NYSDOT had them moved to New York for commuter service. The train was lost when some bums started a fire in them... When was that, 1985?

With the ACMU's... How many 1000-series cars lasted in revenue service by the 1980s? Was 1077 the only survivor?

Thanks in advance for any help...

NJ, NY & CT COMMUTER RAIL Roster of Equipment BY OTTO VONDRAK wrote:4800-series coaches

When Metro-North expanded service on the Danbury branch to include more direct service to Grand Central in 1991, they found themselves short of equipment. At this time, Detroit's commuter carrier SEMTA (operating the last remnant of the former Grand Trunk Western service) called it quits. Up for grabs were various rebuilt former Pennsy, GTW, and Union Pacific coaches in reasonable condition. These cars ran in SEMTA colors for awhile, and were kept in traInsets. Soon, the cars received paint similar to that of the ACMU 1100's- gray with a wide blue stripe below the windows. They were numbered in the 4800 series and operated for about two years until more conventional equipment could be found. The coaches sat on the dead line in Croton for a year until they were sold off or scrapped.
http://piercehaviland.com/rail/roster.html Is this the kind of info you were looking for? The 100s appear to be the PRR World's Fair coaches of which I know of 2 that are preserved (PV Braddock Inn and and Coach 1547).

EDIT: Here's a pic I found of MNCR Coach 111

Thanks for the link. Yeah, my name is on that, but I didn't write half of that stuff, the owner of the site has updated on his own. I think I wrote the original page in 1997 or 1998. Anyway that was a long time ago. Thanks!

Very useful, thank you. Do you know why 1037 was listed as a "private car?" Was it a club car/bar car by chance?

Otto: 1037 was in use as a club car on a train that ran between Tarrytown and GCT. I believe that there was some alteration to the interior but I can't be certain after this many years. 1077 was used to transfer supplies between Harmon and GCT she was fitted with large baggage type doors at one end.

Otto: I trust that you will forgive the piecemeal way that I am answering your query but I am consulting several different sources while I do it.

There were a total of twenty two cars leased from Michigan in 1984. 10 of these 4808-4817 were subsequently purchased by Metro-North. I believe that the other 12 were returned to Michigan in or after 1986 when the CDOT owned Shoreliner I's entered serivce on the Danbury Branch. The 10 Metro-North cars were later used later used for the run between New Rochelle and GCT. The trainset made on trip down in the am rush and one trip up in the pm rush. Since these were standard steam heated coaches they would deadhead back to GCT after the evening rush and be hooked up to the steam lines there . In the early morning hours they had to deadhead up to New Rochelle for am service. A pair of FL-9's were assigned to this train and they had to run around the equipment at each terminal. This trainset may have remained in service until the M-6's arrived in 1993.

On at least one occasion the trainset made a run on the Hudson Line in what my friends at the Equipment Desk called a "bad move." It was on July 5, 1990 and the train was No 857. A pm rush run from GCT to Poughkeepsie. I happened to be on that train and made a note of it. Again I must thank Mr Randy Glucksman for some of this information.

The 4800's ex SEMTA cars sat in Croton Harmon for two or more years after that they were sold to RBB Circus in Florida.
Some of the cars are still in service with them, so they went from one circus to next ;-)

Otto: The SEMTA coaches began service on Metro-North in January 1984. They were assigned to two Poughkeepsie Line trains and one Danbury Branch train. There were a total of 22 cars; twelve 80 seat coaches rebuilt from PRR sleeping cars, nine 84 seat coaches rebuilt from UPRR long distance coaches and one 74 seat snack bar car. The cars were leased to Metro-North for one year at $40.00 a day.

The ex PRR cars were:
101 Bloomfield
102 Royal Oak
103 Pontiac
104 Oak Point
105 Clawson
106 Bloomfield Township
107 Troy
108 Hazel Park
109 Southfield
110 Berkley
111 Birmingham
112 Pleasant Ridge

The ex UP cars were:

4808 Detroit (Snack Bar)
4809 Huntington Woods
4810 Ferndale
4811 Franklin Village
4812 Bingham Ferms
4813 Lathrop Village
4814 Madison Heights
4815 Beverly Heights
4816 West Bloomfield
4817 Waterford Township

Car 4808 Detroit was almost always assigned to the Danbury train. I was the Assistant Storekeeper at the Metro-North Commissary at the time and I recall stocking her with beverages and snacks.

Some of this information comes from my own records and some of it from Mr Randy Glucksman.

Otto: I can give you the following information about the D & H cars. There were tweleve of them and they were purchased by the NYSDOT for operation on the Hudson Line of Conrail. The numbers were:

31 - Ausable River 62 seat coach
32 - Bulwagga Bay - 62 seat coach
33 - Schroon Lake - 62 seat coach
34 - Whiteface Mountain - 62 seat coach
35 - 83 seat coach
41 - Saratoga Lodge - diner lounge
42 - Adirondack Lodge - diner lounge
201 - 66 seat coach
202 - 66 seat coach
203 - 66 seat coach
205 - 66 seat coach
206 - 66 seat coach

Cars 205 and 206 were listed as retired in 1981 and scrapped. This may have been due to a fire that occurred on the lower level of GCT on Febrary 8, 1980. I was the 3rd Trick Operator at "NW" Tower that night and I recall a trainload of cripples passing the tower headed for North White Plains Yard. I don't recall which cars they were but it was clear that they were beyond any economical repair.

The 1037 was a private car, always on the south end of the consist. The interior was modified when the car was in service with PC.Floor carpeting was added as were individual arm chairs. The train originated and terminated at Harmon.Private cars were withdrawn from service by 1984 for reasons I cannot recall.Japp would be more up on this than I am.

1037 is not a coach however but a pre-ACMU EMU converted into a club car .

I must have let it go over my head: the 1000's were EMU's built by ST.LOUIS CAR COMPANY in 1950[originally 4500's for the NYC].
