At one point I heard that the Lackawanna, PRR (using overhead wiring), and NYC (using 3rd rail) couldv'e electrified to Chicago. Why wasn't this done back in the day?

If only this would've happned Amtrak service today from NYP to Chicago would be much quicker, plus there woudl be concrete ties and Acela service could've been used on the NYP-Chicago route.

It would be intrestign to see an electric train to that far to Chicago though had the Big 3 electrified that far west rather then termiantign in the burbs outside the city. Atleast NYP-Chicago would be a much bigger electrication route in the US then NEC.
