I posted this question on the Amtrak forum but nno replies. Maybe someone here has an idea as to what may be going on.

Last night I heard on the scanner that there was a "downeaster extra" heading back to North Station. This occured maybe 15 minutes after the 5:00 pm train from North Station arrived in Portland. It apparently dropped off the passengers and headed right back. I don't know if it made th return trip from Boston at 11:00pm-replacing the bus.

Anyone hear anything about this?

That was an extra from Portland to Southampton Street Yard to do equipment changeouts. Under the old schedule, this was usually done
after the arrival of 686 in Boston. However, 686 turns in Boston as
No.687. No 11PM departure. You can also see these extra on the weekends.

Dave, am I correct that the regular Downeaster crews are the same crews that bring the train over to Southampton Street for service during the evenings?
