In 1993 SP removed Track 1 from over the summit of Donner Pass between Norden and Eder (Shed 47) and track 2 between Switch 9 and Cisco. The reason I heard was to reallocate the valuable 133/136# rail to the more heavily used Sunset Corridor for track expansion and to keep costs down. (Is it true that rail is one of the railroads main assets?)

California has passed Proposition 1B, the Trade Corridor Improvement Fund (TCIF). Under the adopted program there is a Track and Tunnel Improvements at Donner Summit (Project ID #8). It is estimated to cost $86 million, with TCIF funding 50%. It is estimated to start in July 2010. http://www.catc.ca.gov/programs/TCIF/Ad ... 041008.pdf

I am supportive of lowering the tunnel base so as to accomodate double stack container traffic. However, will this project also include reopening/reconstructing the double tracks that were removed by SP in 1993?

According the the AAR's study on railroad lines in 2035 without any capacity improvements, Donner Pass will be at capacity. Does anyone know what this program will attempt to accomplish over Donner?

Sacramento Bee had an editorial on the program. Why should the state support UP with 50% matching when UP won't assure the state that they will cooperate with State in operating more passenger trains over Donner Pass. http://www.sacbee.com/110/v-print/story/803840.html
