Did you know that Austria had had one of the biggest rack-wheeled steam locomotive worldwide?
History
In 1939, the Deutsche Reichsbahn ordered two 1´F1´zz-t4h tank rack-wheel locomotives for the "Erzbergbahn" (in US-designation 2-12-2). They were built by LOFAG-locomotive works in Vienna.
At the test drives in 1942 the rack wheel system was, because of the war, prone to troubles.
This rack wheel system was only upgraded at locomotive 97 401 (since 1953: AFR 297.401) up to 1955. The other locomotive (97 402) was used as spare parts source for 297.401.
1964 the 297.401 had been taken out of order because of their too expansive operating costs. AFR 297.401 has reached a mileage of 33000 km.
Since 1976, the AFR 297.401 is a memorial locomotive in Vordernberg Markt (a station along the "Erzbergbahn") .
Technical data:
pulling force 150 kN, steam pressure 16 atü, grate area 3,9 m², heating surface total 210,8 m², superheating surface 72,5 m², cylinder diameter 610 mm, stroke 520 mm, cylinder inclination 1:50, drive on third coupled axle, Heusinger steering, Giesl-ejector with smoke tube restriction
carrying wheels system Adams
rack wheel car:
cylinder diameter 400 mm, stroke 500 mm, intermediate transmission 2:1, transversal coupling rods system Abt
Brakes:
Riggenbach counter-pressure regulating brake, differential lamella brake for the rack wheels, train brake with compressed air
tender:
side water tank capacity 6,06 m³, back-side water tank capacity 3,51 m³, total water capacity 9,57 m³, coal capacity 4,5 m³
