On second thought, maybe your #21 was Golah Erie/NYC?

note- the diamond was NOT in Oak Point Yard. It was in High Bridge Yard (Bronx, NY), where the CSX Oak Point LINK crossed a Metro-North yard lead track.

More on Chemung.
I wasnt sure if today's route 17 passes over the Erie in the same spot as the DL&W/Erie crossing..

it does.

but I still cant tell if the DL&W passed over the Erie on a bridge, or if there were at-grade diamonds.
Route 17 is on the DL&W ROW west of that point, but not east of that point.

from that junction point East to Waverly, most of the DL&W ROW is still intact, and was not used for route 17..
so following the DL&W from Wilawana to the junction should give a clear view of the height of the DL&W as it approched the junction!
sounds like a walk is in order!

I drew in the current route 17 in Red:

In the end the DL passed over a bridge. I do, however, have an instruction book, complete with diagrams, on how to operate across the diamonds at this point! Dated around 1880. As I stated in my first post here, virtually all were first diamonds.

interesting! thanks Henry.
seems strange that the DL&W would have raised itself that much..although I suppose its not really *that* high..and a bridge would be much more convient for both railroads than a crossing..

ok!

good point..
then maybe we should just stick to "modern" diamonds..
of the 20th Century.

I always wondered if the Erie and DL&W originally crossed the LV with diamonds in Waverly/Sayre.
(in modern times, both passed over the LV on bridges..today the Erie (NS southern tier main) still passes over the former LV in Waverly)

I know the Erie was raised at some point, and was originally lower..today its clearly on an artificial embankment both east and west of downtown Waverly.
But I have never seen a photo of crossings in Waverly..
I will ask Frank Evans about that..

Ah, finally something I know enough about to add to! :-D

The diamond still in use in Blasdell is GB crossing, where the Erie, then EL, now BSOR crossed two tracks, the Nickel Plate, then N&W, now NS and the Pennsy leading to Mayville. The Pennsy took up their track after the PC merger as the NYC main was just a hundred feet away, leaving only the N&W.

Maybe three times the charm? ;-) Just kidding....

Please add:
Mount Morris: DL&W/Erie (DL&W double)

I'm pretty sure that there's a diamond over CSX Main Line track 3 just South of River Bridge (CP1) in Buffalo. My track plan shows "The Beach Lead" coming off Main Track # 1 in a West direction and dimonding over Track 3 and then becoming the "Eastbound" through Ohio St. Yard. It's way off limits into private property back there so I have no way to confirm that it still exists.

B,
see if you can find it here:

http://maps.google.com/

do a search for Buffalo, NY, then click on "satellite"..
google has very high-res images for Buffalo..
if the crossover is there, it should show up clearly.

DL&W elevated the main line in Elmira in the 30s. If there was a diamond in Chemung, the elevation may have replaced it with an overpass.

Driving east on 17/86 towards the Chemung exit, you can see the DL&W ROW to the south and there is no question that in the end the DL&W had an overpass over the Erie.

Scott, one more diamond (gone): Owego - DL&W/LV
