"Officials with Housatonic Railroad are reporting that an engine has derailed at a crossing along their freight line in New Milford.

Colin Pease, vice president of special operations for the railroad, said the train was approaching the Boardman Road crossing and jumped the track as a result of ice build up at the crossing."

"Pease said typically an engine will break apart any ice that builds near the rail as it moves through, but the ice in this case, “must have been like concrete,” because the ice didn’t budge and forced the train off the tracks."

At the Boardman Rd. grade crossing. The overnight icing on the road and crossing surface were the culprits.

EDIT: Nevermind...other thread beat me to it: http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopi ... 0&t=155016" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Not at Boardman Rd crossing. Closer to Aspetuck Ridge Rd, at a private crossing.

Don't know, but the "img" tags need to be lowercase...in your post they are uppercase

Here you go, Joe. I had to click on the "IMG" under "Links to share this photo". I looked on the aerial photos, and isn't there a switch about 40 meters behind the power? And yes, it's 490 meters to Aspetuck Ridge Road and 600 meters to Boardman Road. And yes, there's a house up on the hill there, which looks to have a private crossing. But it also looks like right about where the house is, is a switch going up the hill to Century Brass Products.

Thanks Russ, Photobucket maybe has changed things up, as I was able to post photo's no problem earlier this year. The trackage is level there, and yes, a switch to what also was Scovill's Metal Works lies right about where engine is. 3 tracks go into that building. Such a job loss issue here. Them and Nestle's closing.
Workers were digging out snow from front of derailed engine. Don't think re-railing frogs will do it. I would think they would use 2nd loco to back train, to clear crossing.

Tempting as it may be to blame Housy's upkeep for this one, the icing yesterday morning was brutal. They weren't the only local RR having major issues with "concrete" ice that the train couldn't clear out of the crossing flanges: http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopi ... 9&t=155019" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

Typical Southern New England wintertime operating hazard. Now, if they derail on the return trip however. . .

So how many other local railroads derail ??? yesterday ;-)

Well she's back on the rails. Jack lifts, and a lateral jack, made in Germany did the job. W.J. Reigel from Selkirk did the job.
