I'm curious why CSX Dispatcher Jacksonville is controlling traffic in Baltimore?

Because, well, that's where the CSXT dispatch center is located.

I think the question is, Why not CSX Dispatching Northern, Selkirk? The answer to that is, probably, that CSX has not (yet) moved any of their "prior" CSX dispatchers to the former Conrail dispatch center, even though the Selkirk (and Indianapolis) dispatch office appears destined to stay.

CSX Western (former Conrail) dispatching out of Indianapolis did in fact receive a few territories from the old B&O areas, specifically around Willard and New Castle. Why has Selkirk not gotten similar? I do not know.

Baltimore Dispatching center is to open some time the end of the year, from what I hear. Nothing going to Selkirk.

CSX Pope's Creek sub is done by Trenton Line Dispatcher.

I just thought that they might use a more local operation than Jacksonville.

Selkirk is no more 'local' to Baltimore than Jacksonville is.

No. While there are congested places where towers are still needed, at least for the near future, they are not going to be reopening any towers. This would be especially true for Berea given the current traffic arrangment. Since the CR split there is very little interaction between NS and CSX there, unlike back in the Conrail days when trains were crossing from the Chicago to Indy lines quite a bit. Sorry to dissapoint you, if you want to see towers in action head down to the old B&O east of Cumberland, MD. Hancock, WV's HO tower is still open, albeit not for long though, and Brunswick, MD's WB tower is still operational, mostly due to the MARC operations in the area. Altoona, PA's ALTO tower on the NS ex Pennsy main is still manned as well.

Where can you see the Hancock tower from (this must be some place over in WV given that the old rail line in Hancock Proper is now a rail trail)?

I thought Alto was closed a few years ago.

joshuahouse, the tower in Hancock is across the Potmac from the town of Hancock, MD, which is where the former Western Maryland right of way is now a trail. HO tower is easily accessible on both north and south sides of the CSX main via route 522. In the long days of summer it also lit nicely from the river (north) side of the tracks in the early morning and evening which allows for a shot without the interference of the pole line on the south side of the tracks.

MNRR_RTC, ALTO is still active, it is now the only tower on the ex Pennsy main between Harrisburgh and Pittsburgh. C Tower in Johnstown was the last manned tower to be closed in late 2003. There have been talks for years about closing ALTO, but after having some problems getting C into the operating picture for the dispatchers those plans seem to be on hold for the time being. Some of the other towers on the hill between Johnstown and Altoona to close with in the past decade include SO, MO, and AR. C, SO, and AR are all still standing, as well as long closed MG tower, MO disintegrated after a local historical group tried to move it.

The July issue of Railpace has an article on Hancock tower with a topographical map of the area around it.

Other than Halethorpe re-opening, I hear moves are supposed to include to Atlanta, Louisville, a couple more desks to Indianapolis, and one or two to Calumet City. Guess we'll see...
