British tv showed some pix of the earthquake. One picture showed a rail line twisted in a S bend.

Is there any news on the rail situation?

(Interesting that the main quake was about as strong as the Haiti quake but no-one was killed.)

Geogrge the rail network weathered the earthquake very well , and all lines are reopened . you can find a report with pictures here . http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/6643079/10 ... ssue60.pdf
Very lucky there were no fatalities , or even many serious injuries , but this is almost entirely due to the time of the earthquake ,4.30 a.m , which meant few people were near the old buildings in the city centre . Also , NZ buildings are built to withstand earthqaukes , it is the older non reinforced brick buildings that were damaged . Apart from those with historical significance , most of them should be demolished as unsafe anyway .

Thanks for viewing Litz , the force of the earthquake is indeed incredible .
The earthdeciding to move 5 metres ( approx 16 feet )sideways tends to have quite an effect .
the locomotive engineers were lucky , a similar quake 20 years ago put stationary locomotives on their side .
