Last Thursday (7/20/2012), I was on the way to Bar Harbor.
Took a quick pass at Waterville hoping to see at least half of an oil train.
Success!!

Here's a list of what appeared to be running power:

BNSF 5345
BNSF 8974
MEC 52
MEC 305
MEC 306
MEC 315
MEC 378
MEC 381
MEC 502
MEC 512
MEC 516
MEC 605
MEC 608
MEC 609
ST 71
ST 72
UP 7838
Shop Switcher

Here's a list of obviously dead power:

BM 342
MEC 302
MEC 308
MEC 309
MEC 318
MEC 320
MEC 518
ST 45 (WL)
ST 205 (WL)
ST 207 (WL)
ST 210 (WL)
ST 212 (WL)

There was one odd ball -- ST 51
It was in a deadline, but looked OK.

The photos are all compiled here:

For you guys that like details, scroll down to the bottom of the web page.
There are two super resolution images for your analysis.
The one called "rag_tag" is 4 images stitched together with PhotoShop.
The one called "oil_power" is 2 images stitched together.

Thanks as always for your reports!
Do you know if the oil train that was there was half of the last loaded oil train or the first half of returning empties?

It looked like the 2nd half of the most recent loaded oil train to me.
As I flew over, 4 engines (led by the 381) were backing onto the loads from the east.

I thought so, but had lost track. Thanks again!

The power for the oil train when I saw it was BNSF, UP, BNSF, MEC 608. Appears to still be there, accept 608 looks like it is with 609 now.

Thanks for posting. Always enjoy looking.

financial reasons (tax most likely).

The most recent aerial survey also solved a mystery - the status and whereabouts of Maine Central business car #333. Intact and apparently in decent condition, and for the moment stored outdoors behind the transfer table at Waterville!

Thank you, Mr. Mayotte!
