Came across a small wood sign labled "WORCESTER SNOW TRAIN", which I assume is from Worcester, MA. Curious as to what this train was, a passenger/ski trip special, or work train ?

You should try posting this on the Boston & Maine/Maine Central board. During the 1930s and '40s, the B&M and New Haven both operated winter "snow train" excursions from New York, Boston, and other points, to spots where there was good skiing. Worcester may have been one origin point; it would seem to make sense.
