The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is seeking proposals for the purchase of eleven (11) locomotives.

In March of 2009, VRE received Operations Board authority to purchase eleven (11) new locomotives with an option to purchase up to nine (9) more. It is VRE’s expectation that the remaining options will be exercised before December 2013. As additional new locomotives are ordered, additional VRE locomotives will be offered for sale.

VRE’s current locomotive fleet consists of:
• Three (3) - F-40 PH (V31-V33)
• Ten (10) - RP-39 2C (V01-V10)
• Five (5) - GP-40 2C (V20-V24)

Suprised Metra didn't look into this before buying two ex-Amtrak F40's from a Tennessee Museum. Granted they are being overhauled, I'm sure VRE's F40's are in better condition.

Don't bet on it.

Yeah, the VRE F40's are ex-Amtrak as well, and could likely need/use a major overhaul by now....

Almost all of them have already been overhauled, between the mid 1990s and a couple of years ago. All are regularly maintained (including preventative maintenance) and when things do happen to them, parts are repaired/replaced immediately. The new facilities at Crossroads allows them to do their own stuff now instead of going to D.C. for Amtrak to take care of them all the time.
