03-07-07 Union Pacific Withdraws Requests to Close Railroad Crossings
Good news for those who use the Union Pacific Railroad Crossings on C.J. Heck Road and Lois Lane south of Salem. Marion County Highway Engineer Jerry Cunningham has received word from the railroad that they are dropping their efforts to close the non-signalized crossings.
Cunningham thinks the railroad changed its mind following the level of opposition and upon learning that some residents would have no way out of their homes during periods of high water when the C.J. Heck Road and Lois Lane are the only way out.
Meanwhile, Cunningham says the Illinois Commerce Commission has ordered the union pacific to install crossing gates and lights at the Church and England Road crossings. He does not know what the timetable is for completing the work. Further details were not immediately available Tuesday afternoon from the Commerce Commission.
