WCSH-6 is reporting that a PAR freight struck an unoccupied passenger vehicle in Portland and that multiple grade crossings are currently blocked.

Additionally, Derek Carpine of GuilfordRailSightings has reported that the train is WAPO and that the leader is GMTX 3109.

Looks like the vehicle just barely got clipped:

I wonder how the parking choice is working for them?

Well, hardly understood a word that lady was saying on the newscast, but generally speaking, it's not a good idea to stop on the railroad ROW no matter the circumstances.

Probably one of those that think the train is no wider than the track.

^^^ Yeah, some people have trouble grasping that "overhang" thing. When Maine Coast began operating the Rockland Branch all those years ago, they were constantly having to make phone calls to get cars moved in Bath. Bath has a city ordinance about parking too close to a track; I think it's 10 feet, and a $50 fine.

Some people reacted with hellish glee a few years ago when Maine Eastern scraped an OSHA inspector's (private) car after he parked it just about at the ends of the ties before going into BIW. Oooooops.

Re the WMTW report: The word "accident" often gets used for any occurrence that was unintentional, when it really means something that was unforeseeable and therefore not preventable. If somebody parks beyond where the gates would be when they came down, how foreseeable (and preventable) is that?
Jeez, some people and their toy SUVs . . .
